A Busy Month for George
08/10/10 8:59 PM

A lot has happened this past month for George first of all honored by Hoops for St. Jude being presented the George Karl Award for Courage in Sport and also honored at the ESPY's receiving the Jimmy V award for Perseverance, both awards being very deserving. Besides the awards he has had a successful tube removal on July 20 being able to get all of his nutrition through the mouth. He is experimenting with many different types of foods to see what works and what doesn't! It seems that soup and salads have worked for him in the last couple of weeks. The most important news is that George received his Pet Scan on Monday and was told by the doctors that he had a beautiful response to the primary site and the lump in the lymph node from the treatment plan. The next Pet Scan will be in four months and the recovery of his voice, taste and mucus is a work in progress but it getting better on a weekly basis. He is going on vacation for a couple of weeks and is looking forward to start coaching in September!

Traveling George and New Addition
07/10/10 8:53 AM

We have been on the road traveling these last couple weeks with stops in Olympia, WA, visiting Kelci, Jackie, Kienan and the new addition Cinaiya who was born last week. We had a great visit celebrating Kienan's 2nd birthday and the birth of their 2nd child. We spent a week out in Washington hoping to get a chance to see the new baby and it worked out where we were able to get two days with her. It was very exciting!! We returned to Denver on July 4 and George was back on the road to Las Vegas for the summer league on the 8th.
He is starting be able to eat a few more solid foods or I should say he has been more adventurous in trying new items. It is not a lot but it is a start. Yesterday he was so excited that he ate two tomatoes and he made sure he told me they were big!
Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers!

George 2 months out from treatment
06/16/10 9:13 PM

George looks great, feels he is getting stronger and is eager to eat regular food again. He is swallowing his calories mostly liquid nutrition and a few cans through the feeding tube. The mucus is still an issue- some days better than others!! We continually go to the hospital weekly to get his levels checked for his blood thinning medicine. He continues to be able to spend more time at work and we also traveled to Milwaukee and Neenah this past week to see family and friends. We have a busy summer ahead of us and look forward to our adventures.

Update on George
05/17/10 2:37 PM

I just wanted to give you an update on how George is doing since his return from the hospital. His energy level is starting to slowly come back, nutrition is still mainly from his feeding tube with an occasional sighting of peaches being swallowed. He has tried a few other things which usually ended with - I'm not ready for that! He has gone into work a few times and is getting out an about other than just the doctor visits. The major complaint is still the mucus which seems to be never ending. We usually have to go the doctors office a couple times a week yet to get his INR checked to see if he is on the correct dosage of Coumadin for his blood thinning medicine. He is in good spirits which is the most important thing!!! He also lost approximately 40 lbs which might not be great for his recovery process right now but once he is feeling better this will help his energy and activity level.
Thanks again for all of your wonderful thoughts and prayers!!!!

Looking forward to going home!
05/04/10 10:06 PM

George is still in the hospital but is expected to come home tomorrow. He woke up yesterday with a very swollen left knee which bothered him most of the day and the doctors were still cautious about him being able to get out of bed due to his clotting right leg so he was bed ridden since Friday night and going a little stir crazy. It is tough being in the hospital and being confined to your bed so he was welcoming his move from the bed to a chair. We were hoping to be able to come home today but the swelling in his left knee caused him from bearing any weight on the leg so the trip to the chair was a painful experience. I knew George was in a lot of pain because he complained (which he doesn't do very often) about his left leg more than any other procedure he has had during his hospital stay. After an ultrasound and x-rays, they determined there was a lot of fluid in his arthritic knee and would have to drain it to see if it is just fluid or blood pooling in the area. Thank goodness it was only fluid - Dr. John Woodward drained 60cc of fluid out of his knee and gave him a cortisone shot to relieve the pain and swelling.
To help with the blood clotting they decided to put George on Coumadin and ARIXTRA which will probably continued until a therapeutic oral anticoagulant effect is established with the Coumadin.
We want to thank all the doctors, nurses and staff for all of their wonderful and amazing care they have given us during these last couple of months.
