Update/ 2017 Courage Classic

It seems that summertime has become the time for family updates, and, not coincidentally, Courage Classic fundraising appeals. For the second year in a row, I (Emily) will be riding in the Courage Classic to raise money for the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children's Hospital Colorado. This year, however, Dave will be sitting the ride out to take care of Leopold and Norah while I ride, meaning it is my responsibility to fundraise enough for both of us! I know we have done quite a bit of fundraising over the years for various events and organizations, but we seem to have focused...

Update / 2016 Courage Classic

It's a little heartbreaking when you go to log on to mylifeline.org and have trouble remembering your password. It has just been too long since I was regularly logging on to post updates on Hazel.

It's been almost a year since I've posted, so first things first: the big news (that I'm sure most of you already know about) in our family this year is the birth of our daughter, Norah Ruby, born October 25. Her name means "light", and it is so fitting for her. Norah is sweet, mellow, and such a joy. Now that she is mobile and crawling, I've nicknamed her "Quiet Trouble" because her quiet...

Courage Classic

Dear Friends and Family,

In just under two weeks, Dave will be riding in the Courage Classic in honor of Hazel alongside his mom Kim (aka Mimi) and friends Nathan and Jacob. This will be the fourth year he will be cycling in the three day mountain tour to raise money for Children's Hospital Colorado, but obviously this year will be different from any other. To say that we miss Hazel is a terrible understatement. Her absence is felt deeply every day of our lives. Our hearts hurt in a way we never thought possible. And as we approach the one year anniversary of her death, we try not to give...

Preparing for Hazel's Birthday

Dear Friends and Family,

I wanted to post an update to let you know about our upcoming plans to honor Hazel for her birthday. Hazel would be 4 on Thursday, April 9. We have several activities planned that we think would have made Hazel happy. One of the things we would like to do publicly is hold a toy drive for Children's Hospital Colorado. Toys help brighten hospital stays and clinic visits, bring normalcy to birthdays and holidays, and help facilitate speech, occupational, and physical therapies. We will be giving first priority on the donations to the toy chests at the Center for...

Hazel's Eulogy

At Hazel's service 7 weeks ago, I (Emily) had the honor of giving a Eulogy for Hazel. I was asked to share my words for those who were unable to attend the service.

______________________________________________________________________________

We would like to extend our gratitude to our friends and family who have come here today to honor our daughter, Hazel. Our daughter's passing has left a great void in our lives that will never be filled, but your love of Hazel helps ease our sorrows.

Most of you know the details that shaped the course of Hazel's life. She was born April 9, 2011. She...

A note about tomorrow

For those attending Hazel's memorial tomorrow, we wanted to let you know that our church does not have a parking lot. Please utilize street parking, and be aware that there are some "1 Hour" parking areas in the neighborhood. Please do not park in the Whole Foods lot, and be respectful of residential driveways.

We look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Services for Hazel

Family and friends, thank you so much for your love and support. Your kind words, the photos you have shared, the meals you have prepared, your hugs, prayers, and presence have helped us in ways that words cannot describe. Please continue to share any photos you have of our beautiful Hazel with us- remembering her happy times has lifted our spirits.

We are planning to honor Hazel on Monday, August 11 at 10:00 AM with a memorial service at Denver Community Church, 1101 S. Washington St, Denver, CO 80210. All are welcome to attend the service. Festive attire encouraged, especially Hazel's...

Hazel

It is with saddened hearts that we share the news that Hazel Anne passed away at 9:45 last night at Children's Hospital Colorado. She left this world peacefully and in our arms. She was admitted yesterday for pain control. We are in shock from her sudden passing, but are grateful that her pain was not prolonged, as she deteriorated very quickly over the weekend. Heaven has gained a very special little girl.

With Love, Emily and David

Meals

Hi everyone, it's been a rough day for Hazel. We're suspecting that Hazel is experiencing side effects from radiation. She got very little sleep last night and has been very uncomfortable today until she finally settled down for a nap. We are working with her care team to make are she can stay comfortable. Unfortunately, we have put her back on dexamethasone. Hazel's comfort is our priority, and she needs lots of holding and cuddling. Because we feel spread pretty thin, we have set up an entry in the mylifeline calendar for meals. For those who have asked how they can help, bringing our...
