My Death Days Parties!

There are many personally significant death days in my life.

Death Days mark the death of hopes and dreams, relationships, living situations, health status, employment, functioning, possibilities, travel options and possibilities beyond measure.

I’ve tried to celebrate each one with a small, personal ritual – something appropriate. No gold watches or big celebrations with others, but an acknowledgment of loss and transformation.

I’ve been doing advanced cancer for over 25 years...

Some of you are probably wondering, “what gives?

“Stephanie ends visits with her nearest and dearest, her oldest and bestest, but this guy we don’t even know is taking photos of her half-clothed?”

Well, my friends, it’s like this. The more inward I go, the more basic I grow. I’ve realized that the purpose of my life includes both learning and work. I may be addicted to learning, but I’m not a work-aholic. I don’t work to avoid my life, but because it’s my life.

Over a year ago, a wise counselor sent...

A Rock, A River, A Tree

Beautiful musical rendition of A Rock, A River, A Tree

Inaugural Poem

Maya Angelou

20 January 1993

A Rock, A River, A Tree

Hosts to species long since departed,

Marked the mastodon.

The dinosaur, who left dry tokens

Of their sojourn here

On our planet floor,

Any broad alarm of their hastening doom

Is lost in the gloom of dust and ages.

But today, the Rock cries out to us, clearly, forcefully,

Come, you may stand upon my

Back and face your distant destiny,

But seek no haven in my shadow.

I will give you no more hiding place down here.

You, created...

Dear mylifeline friends,

There may or may not be a book developed from this blog. A year before I started it, I wanted to write the book I wanted to read – what I always wondered about living with serious illness and conscious dying. I’ve read well over 10,000 books in my lifetime and was always hoping to explore this level of detail with an author. Since nobody else seemed to be doing it, it fell to me to write the book I wanted to read. I’m grateful that you’ve...

Helen’s widowed husband John wrote this morning to let us know that she died on Thursday.

In early March, Helen and I became instant online friends when she wrote me about her indwelling ascites drain and how her life was hobbled tethered by it. I was able to provide concrete suggestions for better living with the drain (Yes, you can drain yourself. No, you don’t need daily home nursing care for that.)...

Talkin' Blues - Woody Guthrie

If you want to get to heaven, let me tell you what to do,

You gotta grease your feet in a little mutton stew.

Slide right out of the devil's hand,

And ease over to the Promised Land.

Take it easy! Go greasy!

Great love for all!

I’m like this poppy blooming outside my front door this morning – tattered and frayed, swaying in the wind, yet my star shines in my center. I just noticed the bug-eaten former bloom beneath today's star! Subliminal advertising!
