I’m living more in dream time than waking time and have been for some time.

From Chronos’ clock time to Kairos’ timeless time.

Yes, I witness evidence of time’s passage, but it’s the wind in the trees and the falling catalpa blooms that tick time from life’s clock now. All is both focused/intent and diffuse/broad. The few plans I allow...

When Giving is All We Have

One river gives

Its journey to the next.

We give because someone gave to us.

We give because nobody gave to us.

We give because giving has changed us.

We give because giving could have changed us.

We have been better for it,

We have been wounded by it—

Giving has many faces: It is loud and quiet,

Big, though small, diamond in wood-nails.

Its story is old, the plot worn and the pages too,

But we read this book, anyway, over and...

Charismatic leaders and their charmed followers – I’ve been trying to make sense of this dynamic for my entire life.

I’ve seen hypocrisy up-close-and-personal, having felt the devastating effects of betrayed trust, having witnessed broken followers – some blameless victims and others self- or other-blaming.

Cults come and go with great rapidity in my neck of Northern California. Many are formed around charismatic leaders, gurus, self-proclaimed wise men, silver-tongued grifters and sexual...

Pink Moon

The Pond -- Mary Oliver

You think it will never happen again Then, one night in April

the tribes wake trilling.

You walk down to the shore.

Your coming stills them,

but little by little the silence lifts until song is everywhere

and your soul rises from your bones and strides out over the water.

It is a crazy thing to do -

for no one can live like that, floating around in the darkness over the gauzy water.

Left on the shore your bones

keep shouting come back!

But your soul won't listen;

in the distance it is unfolding

like a pair of wings, it is sparking like hot...

Strength to Change

Nasrudin was now an old man looking back on his life. He sat with his friends in the tea shop telling his story. “When I was young I was fiery – I wanted to awaken everyone. I prayed to Allah to give me the strength to change the world.

In mid-life I awoke one day and realized my life was...

Feeding Your Demons Process – Abbreviated Version

Nine Relaxation Breaths

Take nine deep relaxation breaths with long exhalations: for the first three breaths, breathe in and bring the breath to any tension in the body releasing it with the exhalation. For the second three breaths, inhale into any emotional tension, feel where you hold it in your body and release it with the exhalation. And lastly, breathe into any mental tension. Feel where you hold nervousness, worries or mental blockages in your body and release them with the exhalation

Motivation:

Generate a heartfelt motivation to...

Please Celebrate my 60th Birthday with(out) Me

This photograph was taken 20 years ago at my 40th birthday party. I’m the bald one and this is my beautiful family! I wasn’t expected to make age 41. Now I’m turning 60.

Chemotherapy failed me in 1996 and I haven’t had any since, but relied mainly on Iscador, anthroposophic medicine and a variety of healing allies. It’s been a wonderful life and I’m grateful for it, but glad to know it’s passing.

Everything I know about food and eating I learned in Kindergarten. Say grace, be kind, share, eat all the food on your plate (starving children in China and India) and boycott grapes. Okay, the UFW grape boycott came later, around the time of lessons on Communism and Democracy.

Communism = all day bread lines.

Democracy = stuffed supermarket shelves with freedom of choice to buy different brands of bread.

In my family democracy meant progressive engagement...

Being an Under in the Land of Over

Here I am – underweight, underworked and underemployed (okay, unemployed), under-educated, cheap/thrifty/conscious, going under with cancer.

Here I am – living in a land where people tend to be overworked, overscheduled, overstressed, overspent, overly consuming of resources, overweight, over-educated, over-qualified and so over it all!

Locally, I notice that most of the tourists I see in Sonoma County’s wine country are thin, beautiful, affluent and busy consuming the best of what we have to offer – both stuff and life style experience.

Regionally,...
