Don't Know Mind

Frank Ostasteski's five precepts for companions on the journey of accompanying the dying sprang to mind this morning.

"The Fifth Precept: Cultivate Don't-Know Mind. This describes a mind that's
open and receptive. A mind that's not limited by agendas, roles and expectations. The great Zen teacher Suzuki Roshi, was fond of saying, 'In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's there are few.'" *

It's a good holiday weekend for me to practice don't know mind.

The CT results won't be available until Monday or Tuesday.

The fluid around my lung continues to increase and cause discomfort.

Will I be able to avoid the ER? Be eligible for a talc procedure next week? If so, how will it go? If not, what will happen next?

Can I stay present, open and receptive to whatever arises as it arises?

Even if I can't soothe myself with a deep breath?

Fortunately, I live in a very beautiful place with lots of nature. There are thousands of plants within breathing distance to supplement my oxygen. And to bring great joy. The red shoulder hawks are courting and the bird activity here has picked up to a swirling, cacophonous flurry of almost springtime activity. There is so much life to fall in love with.

It's a good day to be alive!

Wishing you great joy today and everyday,
Stephanie
