Mike saw his oncologist Dr. Curti on Tuesday, Aug. 16th to discuss the CT scan done earlier that morning & his thoughts on going forward after the lung surgery. In short, he mentioned that the last pathology report went into further detail, about the right pulmonary vein which was cut out and discussed the existence of microscopic cancer cells in the margin. Dr. Curti suggested we meet with a radiologist to find out if targeted radiation would be in order.

We then followed up on Dr. Curti's suggestion by meeting with a Radiologist at Providence. She explained that radiation of microscopic cells is best conducted within a few weeks of the completed surgery and that at this point, 3 1/2 months out, it may be a better strategy to wait until there is something visible to focus the radiation on. She also pointed out that there are two separate statements in the Pathology report that appear to say in one section that microscopic cancer cells were present and in the other that the margin was clear. She wants to look into that further.

However, we also discussed the nagging cough and wheezy breathing Mike is living with and how we were told by the Thoracic team that it is not unexpected after the type of surgery and to expect a 9 month recovery. This got her attention and she agreed that a cough is not unexpected, but expressed concern about the wheezing. She pointed out that the CT scans show a narrowing of the wind pipe as it enters whats is left of his right lung. Her concern is centered around "why" is the opening so small? Is it getting smaller? Is it scar tissue from the surgery? Is it a new tumor growing? Is there another reason?

Long story short, she’s taking Mike's case and her concerns to a Monday meeting of oncologists. Mike's lung surgeon will also be there. She wants to present her opinion on using radiation now or later and the possibility that something unusual is happening at the wind pipe entry into his lung. She explained to us that it might be prudent to send a camera down his throat to assess the closure and to get a closer look at the tissues to determine what is going on. She said depending on the results, she might again consider if radiation would be an option. She will be calling us Monday late afternoon with the consensus of the group. If they want to do a look-see down Mike’s throat it could be scheduled shortly (couple of weeks maybe) and then wait for the report and have another appointment to discuss results and ideas on moving forward.

We would love your prayers, specifically that if the cancer is still there, that it be able to be treated with the options she talked about at last Thursdays Radiology appointment.

Praying for expert advice & decision making,

Mike & Chris
