Hopefully back again soon

I fell back in January and started having severe leg pain. It had gotten to the point where I am in a wheelchair, and for a while I thought it was an injury to my leg. It turns out that apparently when I fell I broke a piece in my L5 vertebrae and now it's shifted pretty bad and it is pinching my nerves which is causing my leg pain.

I'm glad they finally found it, and after talking with the surgeon on different possible treatments (basically a steriod injection or surgery) I've decided to have the surgery. They will put some screws, rods and a bone graft in my lower back and that should stab

News about my back

Well it's been two weeks since I fell and I'm still having very severe pain. The doctor gave me more muscle relaxants and they took x-rays yesterday.

Just got the results back and I've got a slipped disk from the fall, so I'm going to be starting physical therapy first to see if that can help it. If that doesn't fix it then I'll have to go see an orthopedist to discuss the next steps.

My VA appointment about my knee went well, I have to go through physical therapy for my knee first, then I'll get referred to the orthopedics department at the VA about the replacement.

Hope everyone is doing we

Rough start to the week

Well, Monday the roads weren't too bad, but the problem wasn't with driving it was with walking. As I was walking back to my car (very carefully) I slipped on some ice and really borked up (technical term for hit really hard) my lower back. It felt fairly not to bad Monday night, and I figured it would be worse in the morning.

I woke up yesterday morning and knew immediately that I needed to go to the doctor. So I called them and apparently I wasn't the only one to fall in the ice, they got me in first thing this morning, so yesterday I basically stayed in bed and iced my back. It was pre

Starting to check on my VA stuff

Well I started the process on getting back into the VA system so I can have my knee replaced. The first part is establishing a primary care doctor at the VA and explaining everything to him and having him check me over. Then he'll send me over for a consult with the orthopedic department where they'll be making the final decision on the surgery, if when and how.

I was a little bit worried after my experience back when I got out of the Air Force about getting the appointment. Back then it was going to be 180 days, and that was when I had just had my first surgery on my knee and was in a hip c

Great time at Buffalo Wild Wings

Had a great time celebrating the end of my radiation treatments last night, thanks for everyone's support and for those who were able to come out last night. Much food was had by all, and it was a lot of fun getting my friends together.

Now I'm just in a waiting period for 6 weeks when I'll go back and get my PSA test. I'm expecting it to be clear, and then I'll be 'officially' considered cancer free. Of course I'm going to have to get tested probably every three months for the next few years, and hopefully I'll stay clear.

I'm definitely feeling much better, still goes kind of in cycles but

Radiation treatments are complete!

I had my final treatment today, and I actually tested up a bit. I've made friends with most of the technicians that work in the department and they did a wonderful job treating me. I was very nervous when I first started, but they always encouraged me and cheered me up along the way.

They have an awesome tradition, at the end of your treatments you read a plaque about how you've completed another step in your life, and now you are starting a new year the day you finish your treatments, after you've read the plaque you ring a large gong symbolizing the start of your new journey. The coolest thi

Treatments are almost done

I only have two more to go :)

This week has been very up and down, I feel great one day then struggle the next. I think part of it is the excitement of finishing my treatments give me a physical and emotional boost, but when it wears off it kind of sucks :)

I had my last visit with my oncology specialist for my treatments, the rest will be after care visits. He did say that the effects will take a little bit to wear off but I should slowly get better after the radiation treatments have stopped.

I'm really excited about the party next week,it'll be chance to have some fun instead of thinking abou

Woo hooo!

I'm not sure why, but for some reason I am feeling REALLY good tonight. I've got more energy, no stomach pains or anything else and I've decided to go out for dinner tonight and then go for some coffee and enjoy it while it lasts.

I had to reschedule my off-therapy party to Thursday February 4th at the Buffalo Wild Wings at palladium shopping center at 6:30. If I haven't sent you an invitation, consider yourself invited now :). After the machine broke down Tuesday and the center closing tomorrow they had to add two more treatments to my schedule. I'm currently down to six treatments left, and

In the home stretch for my treatments

After todays treatment I only have 9 more to go. It seems like just yesterday I was going in for a simulation and then my first treatment.

Overall it has gone extremely well and I'm so thankful for the group at the hospital that does my treatments. They have made it a very easy experience for me to get through which has been a huge relief. My side effects are still mild, and I'm hoping that after the treatment ends they'll clear up fairly quickly, but we will just have to see.

Hope everyone's New Year has started off on a good foot.

Getting closer to being done

Just a little over three weeks left to go. Starting to have other symptoms now, yesterday while I was at the eye doctor I had a sharp pain in my left side abdomen. It was mostly a dull ache with occasional sharp pains. After talking with my radiology team this morning it's apparently gas which is a side effect from the radiation. So much is getting generated that I'm getting little bubbles in my digestive tract which is what's causing the pain. It was a little better this morning and they said it will come and go. Not bad at all at least, although it could be an issue for those around me

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone is doing well. I've had some slight nauseous issues with the treatments and a little fatigue, but nothing too bad yet and discussed it with my oncologist today and for now we'll just keep an eye out in case it gets worse. My schedule for treatment occasionally has been changing to early in the morning based on changes in other peoples availability. I can go in either real early or in the evenings, so I'm a little more flexible on when I have my treatments.

Only have one more treatment this week, then off for New Years, then start back up again Monday.

Everyone be safe and I wi
