Opa's Views

September 24th, 2012- I was awakened this morning by a little girl named Sterling Sky; wanting to see her Mimi and Opa.  Here it was her birthday and she wanted to say good morning to us- the best wake up an Opa could ever have.  As she briefly lingered in our room we got kisses and hugs and then a wave as she left the room.

Today has been hard as the outdoor plans we had hoped to do were put on hold for a time where she feels better.  It has been another day of family adjustments to the “new normal” which we still can’t define to any degree of accuracy.  We read books, played make believe...

SterlingTurns 3

Day 59

Three years ago today our sweet Sterling Sky graced us with her presence. Our journey had been forever changed. I remember exactly where I was when she was born. I was heartbroken because I had to remain in Cali and not make the trip to North Carolina. It killed me. But life is what it is. I sent packages and pictures continually  because she needed to know who her Tante was. I loved her so deeply from so far away.

The first time we met we had a connection. I knew this girl had my heart. I was her Tante and she was my sunshine. I understood her, she understood me. She would...

Time in a Bottle

Day 58

“If I could save time in a bottle, The first thing that I'd like to do, Is to save every day, Till Eternity passes away, Just to spend them with you” Jim Croce.

On one hand it seems like our time has been saved in a bottle or that time has stopped. The whole world is still spinning on it’s axis yet we are dead stopped in our tracks. What the heck happened to the last of July, all of August and all of September? It is not even a blur but a complete absence in our memory. Our calendar is marked with when this procedure or that procedure was done. When we rushed to the hospital....

A Ragging Sort of Day

Day 57 It is with great heaviness that I type this post. It's not a normal sort of day...

Normal: adjective 1. conforming to the standard or the common type; usual; not abnormal; regular; natural. 2. serving to establish a standard.

We have yet to set up a new normal but today isn't part of what normal has become... Our JOURNEY today has separated Team RockStar. Part of us are at Ragging Waters and part at home with our Little RockStar. Today was planned as a last Summer hoorah. We were graciously invited here on behalf of the managment team to have more decompression time.

Unfortunately...

RockStar Living

RockStar Living, a journey in it’s own right

Day 56

This post seems long time coming. I have written and deleted countless times. At a general loss of the right words to share with you all. These moments in our lives are so tender, so private yet we want to give a glimpse into them. We know you all love Sterling. We know you all have been praying for Sterling. We know you all care for her as if she was your own. For that we are grateful. In these quiet moments, moments of solitude, moments of utter despair we hold each other and brace ourselves as a family for what lies next. This is why...

On Being Transparent

Hello Rockstars!

As the family member coordinating the fundraisers, I wanted to take a minute and share with you what the funds that you have so graciously and sacrificially given to Sterling are being used for.  This is mainly for accountability on our part.

We are so grateful for all you have done for our family.  On July 28, the world turned upside for us.  That day began a new chapter:  a chapter of uncertainty, of fear, of disbelief.  And from that day forward, God has used you to impact our lives in so many ways.  For the prayers before our Heavenly Father, we thank you; for  those...

Day 45

Day 45

It has taken me several days to compile some thoughts. I am not even sure the ones I have gathered make any sense. I do know I can’t even write them all out here for you to read.

Having to transcribe my brothers thoughts is one of the hardest things I have done on this journey so far. It was late. We knew that we needed to let you all know what was going on in The RockStar House. Through tears my brother talked I transcribed. We cried. We deleted. We wrote. We needed to give you the best description of what our lives are. What are lives are becoming. What the cancer is doing to us. It...

The Visit

So this is the hard post. The post we have been dreading. The post we have been agonizing over. The post that we knew would come sooner than later. The post that came before we were ready.

As you know according to Sterling’s last MRI on the 4th of September tumor shows a regrowth 40% of its original size. This is an alarming rate of growth and has shocked Sterling’s entire medical team. And, as you know we have decided to come home. What this means is that our precious little girl has only a few days left of her visit with us. We have already arranged her palliative care and begun meeting...

Some Kielsmeier's invade Desert Rose

This is a day late but lets face it time is precious so we are spending a ton together right now.

Day 41--We woke up early and headed into Desert Rose Salon. The patrons and stylists had no idea their world was about to be rocked. In walked 12 of our RockStar family members. Sterling Sky needed a proper hair cut. One given by our long time family stylist that we love and not by a surgeon. This appointment was a long time coming. We had already cancelled 2 because of being back at CHOC.

I had the awesome privilege of being the one that Sterling picked to sit with her. You see Sterling...

Ooops

To all of you who follow us exclusively on the blog I apologize for not adding an update here. The days following Labor Day have been a whirlwind and missing a post here was a complete oversight on my part. I am copying and pasting what was written for our FB page: Team RockStar. That being said I, the Tante, invite you to join our page and support as there as well. https://www.facebook.com/sterlingteamrockstar

CHOC Update: Thank you everyone for your continued patience as we sort out the details of this last visit to CHOC. Sterling’s MRI results are in. The tumor is back. The tumor’s...
