A Tale from Aunt Nell

I don’t even know where to begin.  Having never imagined our family would be in this spot, I don’t even know what to say. So I will tell you a little about us, my husband and I.  Uncle Matt and Aunt Nell.  When we were told we were going to have a niece after having three nephews we were quite excited.  And when we were asked to be the godparents of our niece and nephew we were honored and a bit nervous at the responsibility.  But now, knowing Sterling and her sweet brother, we feel even more honored to have that title.  Both of these little ones are such joys and treasures, and we are blessed to have them in our lives.  Spending time with them, and spoiling them as much as is allowed by their parents, is always a wonderful treat. We were so happy to learn that they were moving to Southern California, and even though they live a few hours away it’s great to have the family close.  It is an honor to be Sterling and Bastien’s aunt and uncle.  It’s an honor to be able to love on them, hug them, play with them.  And it’s an honor to be told that they love us too.  After a rough evening in the hospital the other night, it was sadly time to say goodbye for the week. I squatted by the side of Sterling’s bed and rubbed her back.  I kissed her forehead and said “I love you” and in a sweet whisper I watched that cute little face with those cute little eyes say “I love you” back to me.  Because I wanted to stay in that moment as long as I could, I asked her, “You love me?”  And Sterling nodded.  Her uncle Matt was told the same thing.  It is an honor for Sterling to say she loves you, it’s an honor to have a special place in her heart and she certainly has a special place in ours.
I must say, for living in a small town, we are used to driving long distances to get anywhere.  A few hours here or there is nothing.  But when your family is in crisis, especially a little member of the family, the hours somehow feel so much longer and the distance so much greater.  You can’t get there fast enough, and you can’t stay long enough.  Now we drive down on the weekends so that we can be there and not miss a moment, and we try to attend the major doctor appointments. Those weekends have been rough on everyone, but we still continue to be blessed to be with Sterling.  She and I painted pictures.  Uncle Matt and she played a game of “Catch the noses”. And of COURSE princesses and Hello Kitty are involved every step of the way.  We’ve always treasured our time with Bastien and Sterling and we will continue to do so and continue to make memories. We love Sterling and our hearts ache for her.  We remind ourselves that with dark clouds come showers of blessings from our Father and we hold, we CLING, to that.  And we thank Him for this precious little girl that He has given our family.
