Day Twenty

Well, today was the big day. Pretty much went as advertised, got to see the weekend nursing staff as well as one of my doctors before chemotherapy was administered. Nothing new here, which is a good thing.

There are of course several potential nasty side effects from the chemicals, one of which is terrible sores inside the mouth and throat. They mitigate and have had good luck with this by having the patient hold ice in their mouth until melted - 30 minutes prior to, during, and 30 minutes after the procedure. That’s a lot of ice. Boy was my mouth cold! After we were done, I was issued a...

Day Nineteen

Today I got my PICC line, so it makes it easy for the doctors to give medicine and take blood for lab tests. It's better than the central line that was in my neck, but it don't really like it either. Plus, now I can't go swimming. :(

I was surprised that the VA contracts this procedure out. But then, it's better to have it done by someone who does it all of the time I suppose. My line was installed by the always-smiling Natalie (even when she's telling you how this could kill you). Even so, she was very reassuring, confident, and even asked if she could pray over me before beginning. ...

Day Eighteen

What a day - started off a little iffy - really feeling the effects of my BP now - it's always been a tad high, but since I've been off my meds (when I got sick) it's not been treated and I think it's starting to wear on me. It's on the agenda to discuss with my medical team tomorrow morning when I get my PICC line.

Josh & I boarded the shuttle to visit the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. The shuttle takes you close, but we had to walk a bit. Ended going maybe a mile & 1/2 or so. Two major exhibits, one was about WWI, the other was by an artist named Nick Cave who makes 'sound suits'...

Day Seventeen

First day back to the transplant unit, did some lab tests to make sure I'm still viable. Everything should be okay, nothing's changed as far as I know, followed the rules etc. Finally met Dr. Chin (only part of his name, there are about 30 more letters but everyone calls him Dr. Chin). He was a little hard to understand, but didn't say anything that anyone else hasn't already said. He did mention that when my blood counts went down that I'd look like an old man until they rebounded. That's funny.

My favorite Nurse Practitioner Donna reminded me that all of my hair will fall out after...

Day Sixteen

Back in Nashville after a long day driving. The trip was uneventful which is good. I did take a small detour to visit one of my Ham Radio friends in Clarksville TN. Wish the windows opened in my hotel room, I'd have dropped an antenna wire out and brought the HF rig. :)

I did bring my handy talkie (HT for the uninitiated) so maybe I can figure out EchoLink while I'm here.

After I made it to Nashville and secured my room, I drove to Murfreesboro to pick up my son Josh who will be my caretaker this week. After that - a full day of driving - I was ready for bed!

Picture is the...

Day Fifteen

Spent the majority of today packing and loading and all of the other sundry tasks for the road trip tomorrow morning. Still have to cut the fudge though, and load the refrigerated items. :)

Had our neighbor's boy Camden (10 yrs) watching the animals while we were gone, here's a little note he left:

How cute. :)

Also had time to feed our worms this evening. You can tell how happy they were to see me.

Had to give'm a little extra since I'll be gone a spell.

Robin took off work a little early to spend some time with me, so I'd better wrap this up. :) Thanks again folks, for tuning in. I'll...

Day Fourteen

Slept in late today, a little grocery shopping, thrifting, and a quick visit with family. Ran into a friend at Goodwill - good to see Julie again. That pretty well sums it up. :) Looking forward to getting it all together tomorrow so I'll be ready to hit the road early Tuesday. Good night!

Day Thirteen

I'm getting caught up, posting an update on the same day! :)

I'll be leaving out for Tennessee again in a few days, and my checklist is coming together nicely. It was good to have this little break and be even better prepared for the next leg of this journey. Robin will be home for a bit so my son, brother and sisters can tag-team being my caretaker for a few weeks. I look forward to seeing them again.

The neck bandage can come off tomorrow, yay!

Today I've been working again, simultaneously making sure my clients are covered this month, and getting my own business ready for the new...

Day Twelve

It occurs to me that some folks may not be following the "Day" format here. I'm using this naming convention to signify the day since I showed up for my initial transplant appointment in Tennessee. There! Now you're caught up, lol. :)

I'd like to keep up where an update is posted the day of... but I'm finding I can't always do that.

So, day 12 (Friday) found me feeling a little more energetic, got a lot done for work, deleted a ton of black friday emails, and closer to catching up at work. Thank goodness I can work even when I'm not 100%. I also worked SUPER HARD prior to showing up...

Day Eleven - Thanksgiving

I napped on & off throughout the day, I think there must be something in the stem cell collection process that zaps your energy. Still slept through the night too. It's so good to be back home, if only for a few days.

It'd be appropriate to list a few of the things I'm thankful for this year, so here goes:

  • Jesus Christ. I think you know how much I depend on Him. 'nuff said. (but if you need details, please let me know)
  • Robin. What is the value of a Godly woman? Well, it's beyond measure. She saved me this year, in more ways than one. Men, when you find a good woman - treasure her. I...
