Day One

Day One started off really well. I was so tired from driving the day before that I got a really good night's sleep. Since I've never been to the Nashville VA Medical Center, I really wasn't sure what to expect. As far as facilities goes, it looks a little more dated than most of the Milwaukee VA. All of the doctors and nurses that I met today made up for the building’s shortcomings in friendliness. So did the other guests at the VA, but that's to be expected because we're down south.

This day was much like every day I had in the Army, the mantra was “hurry up and wait”. Those of you who’ve served know exactly what I'm talking about. I had four appointments today, and with some of the place under construction it was challenging finding the right place to check in.

The best part of today was meeting some of the other folks who are farther along in the process than I am. I gained some valuable insights into some things to watch out for, and the importance of following the doctor’s instructions. Of course, I’ve been a star patient thus far, so no problems there. I am however a bit grieved to see how many of my brothers and sisters in arms have contracted various forms of maladies requiring this transplant. Be that as it may, EVERYONE I spoke with today demonstrated a very positive attitude, so I am among the best of company.

I’ve asked you for prayers before, and you’ve responded with flying colors. Today my friends, I ask you to pray for the rest of my compadres here. As tough as you’ve imagined it’s been for me, they’ve had it far worse. May God bless them all.

Thank you for taking a few minutes of your day to share with me. Lord willing, I’ll talk to you again tomorrow.
