Obituary of Richard Rudderow Lippincott III plus link to YouTube Celebration of Life Service

Richard Rudderow Lippincott III passed away peacefully at his home in Agoura Hills, CA on February 22, 2016. Ric was born in El Paso, TX, son of Richard Jr. and Joan (Rose) Lippincott in 1957.

Ric’s first radio job was KKON in Kealakekua, Hawaii in 1971. He was 14 years old. He started by sweeping floors there and quickly moved into an on-air position. After 7 years working in what he described as “some of the smallest markets in the free world” Ric moved into management as Program Director of KGMB in Honolulu. Following stints in Fort Lauderdale - Miami, Milwaukee (WISN), Chicago (WLS), Los Angeles (KHTZ), and San Francisco (KYUU), Ric returned to Chicago for a 2nd tour of duty at WLS and sister station WYTZ (Z-95) in 1986.

After programming some of the country’s most successful radio stations, Ric moved on to a successful record label career in 1991. His first label management gig: National Director for Zoo Records. He directed a promotional staff and worked directly with bands like Tool, Matthew Sweet, and Green Jelly. It was at Zoo that he enjoyed his first number one record: “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” by Bryan Adams. It was from the Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves film starring Kevin Costner. The song also won a Grammy Award for “Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture”. It was Bryan Adams’ most successful song of his career.

In 1995 he was hired by Mike Curb, former Lt. Governor of California to become Vice President of Promotion and create a Top 40 department. He also served as executive producer for some artists on that label. Ric’s biggest success story from Curb is LeAnn Rimes. He successfully crossed her from the Country arena to Pop with her biggest hit “How Do I Live”, setting a new record for longest running single in Billboard Hot 100 history, spending 69 weeks on the chart. At 14, LeAnn became the youngest person to ever win a Grammy. In 1997 she won for Best New Artist and Best Female Country Vocal Performance and thanked Ric on national television for being responsible for her success.

In 1998, Ric became Senior Vice President of Promotion for Maverick Records, a label owned by Madonna. He managed a promotion staff including four Vice Presidents and was instrumental in the successful careers of Alanis Morissette, Prodigy, and Deftones.

After conquering the record label business, Ric turned to his first love: Flying. He worked for Mesa Airlines as Dash 8 First Officer and later a Captain for Chrysler Aviation, Inc.

In 2007, Ric began a successful career as an AVP/Account Executive for Chicago Title & Trust.

In an interview while Ric was in Chicago, he talked about how he re-arranged priorities for his 2nd stop there: “I’ve changed those things which are important in my life over the past few years. My job is just one part of my life. Radio is a people business. We have to be able to relate to people outside of radio and the only way to do that is to live outside of radio too. My family is important to me. Flying airplanes is important to me. I enjoy photography. I’ll meet and spend time with people that have families, fly airplanes, and enjoy photography. A lot of people center their lives around their jobs. It’s the most important thing they have going. Their happiness depends on what happens at work. My happiness depends on what happens outside of work.”

Ric was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July of 2015. The family finds comfort in the fact that we were able to all be together in the final moments of our father’s life in the material world, and his legacy will forever carry on in our hearts. . Let each day be a celebration of his life, the lessons he taught us, and the loving impact he will leave with all of us. “Fathers hold their children’s hands for a short while, but hold their hearts forever.”

Ric is survived by his youngest daughter Paige Lippincott and her fiancé Kyle Zion, his youngest son Brandon Lippincott, his eldest son Richard Lippincott IV and his wife Jaime, his eldest daughter Aja and her husband Todd Whipper, grandchildren Taj and Tessa Whipper and Leah Lippincott, his sisters Brooke Mik and Pam Mitchell, his grand-dog Moose, and his loving partner Teri Hogan. The family would like to once again thank everyone for the overwhelming support we continue to receive during this difficult time.
